We all heard it growing up, "mind your manners" but nobody ever said to mind your matters and what does that even mean?

I was recently talking with a colleague who shared with me her current lack of motivation regarding her career. Had she done too much in her life and now nothing is challenging her? I dared to dig deeper and find out.

At first glance someone might say she was just burnt out or worse, "maybe she's depressed!" But what if it's neither? What if, in this age of technology, things have just gotten too automated and less personal. Just two decades ago in any of our respective industries it was all about the 'relationship' with the customer and now it seems it is just about who can do it faster and cheaper.

So what do you do when everyday feels like you're 'going through the motions'? Simply....mind your matters! Start a list of the things that matter to you most and ask yourself what you could do today to further each category.

Happiness
Family Time
Paying Bills
Work/Life balance

Perhaps it's time to change your career path so it aligns with what matters to you now; after all, we change as a person as time goes by.

Research shows that unhappy employees outnumber happy ones by two to one. Think about how many people work in your office and do that math! And, what if you're in a leadership role and need to muster up that 'ata boy' attitude before someone discovers your current melancholy? Well here are some tips that may help improve your mood while you're minding your matters:

Try to limit the amount of time you focus on your 'current dissatisfaction' to just that time of your day where you are 'planning' your steps toward change. (morning yoga or workout)

Find a motivational quote or two that you can call on when needed
- Get busy living or get busy dying (just for example)

Have you eaten yet today? Never discount how much a balanced diet can affect your mood. Don't get hangry!

Call that one colleague or mentor that you know you will enjoy speaking with and chat for a bit.

There are many other scientific, mood lifting, methods you can try like simply going for a walk or turning on some music in your work space. At the end of the day try to turn your focus to what 'matters' to you the most and you'll begin to enjoy your journey again!
